Founded in 1963, CMAI (Clothing Manufacturers Association of India), is one of India’s oldest and largest Association in the Apparel Industry, representing the interests of the Indian Brands and Manufacturers. In addition to the over 4,000 Brands and Manufacturer Members, it services over 25,000 Retailers, including 750 + PLATINUM DEALERS – consisting of the absolute top Retailers in the Country, in terms of Turnover, Payment practices, Ethics & Fairness in dealings. The Association acts as a catalyst of Change, Evolution, and Transformation by interacting with the Government to encourage industry-friendly policies on one hand, and with the Members to keep pace with the dynamics of market forces on the other. CMAI has been responsible for influencing several measures in policies of the Government including GST, PLI, Duty Drawback, Export Promotion Schemes, FTAs, etc. It is also playing a vital role in pushing the industry into a more ESG and Sustainability oriented working.

CMAI is undoubtedly best known for its Fairs, the most important of course being the National Garment Fairs (NGF) – the industry’s largest and most popular Garment Fair – which attracts over 1100 Brands to exhibit and close to 37,000 Retailers to visit. Over the years, CMAI has introduced various other formats which are also becoming leaders in their respective categories. One of CMAI’s bold new initiative is to drive the growth of Indian Brands in the Global Markets, beginning with the BRANDS OF INDIA SHOW in Dubai in November 2023. It is an expression of CMAI’s belief and confidence in the capability of Indian Manufacturers to promote homegrown Indian Brands which in times to come can compete with the best of International Brands on their own turf.

CMAI continues to be authorised by the Government to issue Certificate of Origin (Non-Preferential) to its Exporter Members. CMAI was the first Association from India to be invited to become a member of International Apparel Federation (IAF), based out of Netherlands, and representing the National Associations of over 45 countries. It became the President of the Federation is currently on the Board of Directors of IAF. Future areas of focus include Productivity Enhancement Programs, Knowledge Forums, close collaboration with leading Fashion and Design Institute School of Fashion Technology (SOFT), and drive the Sustainability movement in the Indian Apparel Industry through SU.RE. An exciting proposal being closely examined is the CMAI COOPERATIVE Retail Project.
